Ned Kelly was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police-murderer. He was well known for his boldness and daring, even earning him the nickname of “the Shearer’s Nephew.” Born in 1830 in Victoria he was orphaned by the age of five before being brought up by various relatives. After being arrested for stealing a horse and returning it to its rightful owner he was sent to prison where he would learn how to make shoes and knives. He began his criminal career as a young man when he joined with another escapee William Fitzgerald who had terrorised Victoria as a member of the Toohey Gang.
Ned Kelly is one of Australia’s best known but still lesser-known outlaws and his life story has been fictionalized numerous times. Known as ‘The Australian bushman’, Kelly was born in foster homes to illegitimate parents. He ran away from these homes at an early age and was a constant wanderer through Victoria’s countryside for the duration of his life, never settling down anywhere in particular, living only by his own law until he eventually gained notoriety from being involved in petty crime but being shot by police officers on more than one occasion.
